Simulation session – Objectives

Team training is essential in the simulation session. The participants will be trained in team communication. They will realize that in an ECMO circuit emergency situation, some members must focus on resuscitation of the patient and some managing the problem with the ECMO circuit. Scenarios involving ECMO circuit failure will be simulated and the learners will be trained in problem identification as well as patient management and problem solution. Simulation is conducted in groups of 6 participants with two or three instructors.

Wet lab training session – Objectives

During the wet lab session each participant should gain practical knowledge of assembling the ECMO circuit, priming the circuit, changing oxygenator and changing pump head. 6 participants are trained by two instructors.
Sessions will cover: Drainage Insufficiency, Air Embolism, Pump Failure, Membrane Lung Failure, Gas Failure, Cannular Dislodgement, Circuit Change.

Didactic lectures – Objectives

The objective of the lectures is to provide knowledge to the learners regarding the subject of the respective lecture. The learners are instructed to interrupt the lecturer and ask questions when needed. Short discussions during the lectures are encouraged.

Participant information Neonatal & Pediatric ECMO course 2026

The number of participants is maximized to 18. Besides of the course the registration fee will cover lunches, coffee and one dinner.

After having completed the course, the participants will have increased both their theoretical knowledge and their practical skills in managing neonatal and pediatric patients on ECMO for respiratory and circulatory failure.

The course is in english.

Preliminary program Neonatal & Pediatric ECMO course 2026
