ECMO Course Stockholm 2025

Welcome to the ECMO Course 2025 ”Adult ECMO for respiratory and circulatory failure including septic shock”, Stockholm, October 13th – 16th 2025.

This ELSO ECMO course is intended for physicians (intensivists, surgeons etc), nurses, perfusionists and other health care professionals, who either work in an ECMO program or who are in the process of starting one.

The ECMO course will be conducted by the faculty of the ECMO Center at Karolinska. It will include simulations of ECMO patients, practical training in managing the ECMO circuit with change of different components etc, computer simulations of physiology and didactic lectures. Simulations and practical training will be performed in small groups of 6 participants together with one or two instructors.

The lectures will cover subjects like components of the ECMO circuit, indications for ECMO, contraindications, managing the patient on ECMO, cannulation strategy, physiology, anticoagulation, troubleshooting etc.

Objectives ECMO Course

Simulation session – Objectives

Team training is essential in the simulation session. The participants will be trained in team communication. They will realize that in an ECMO circuit emergency situation, some members must focus on resuscitation of the patient and some managing the problem with the ECMO circuit. Scenarios involving ECMO circuit failure will be simulated and the learners will be trained in problem identification as well as patient management and problem solution. Simulation is conducted in groups of 6 participants with two or three instructors.

Wet lab training session – Objectives

During the wet lab session each participant should gain practical knowledge of assembling the ECMO circuit, priming the circuit, changing oxygenator and changing pump head. 6 participants are trained by two instructors.

Didactic lectures – Objectives

The objective of the lectures is to provide knowledge to the learners regarding the subject of the respective lecture. There are 12 learners during each lecture. The learners are instructed to interrupt the lecturer and ask questions when needed. Short discussions during the lectures are encouraged.
The “Patient cases” part involves presentation of patient cases. The cases are presented by two instructors part by part and the learners are encouraged to discuss different possibilities to manage the respective problems or complications. This part of the course is very interactive and the objective is to stimulate the learners to use the knowledge they have gained during the course in a clinical situation.

Participant information ECMO Course 2025

The number of participants is maximized to 24. Besides of the course the registration fee (24 000 SEK) will cover lunches, coffee and one dinner on the 14th of October.

After having completed the course, the participants will have increased both their theoretical knowledge and their practical skills in managing adult patients on ECMO for respiratory and circulatory failure including septic shock.

The participants will have satisfied Step 1 and Step 2 of the certification application requirements for the ELSO Adult ECMO Practitioner Certificate (E-AEC) after completion of the course.

Participation in the course has previous years has been accredited with 27 CME points from EACCME.

The course is in English.

Registration for the course 2025 will open on the 5th of May.
