Ultrasound examination
An ultrasound examination is performed using an ultrasonic transducer that sends sound waves into the body that are then reflected back from the body's tissues to the ultrasonic transducer. To ensure good contact with the skin, a little gel is used on the baby's skin. The reflected sound is transformed by means of a computer into moving images of tissues and organs which the doctor can then interpret. Using ultrasound, you can see the structure of the heart and how it pumps blood, for example.
