Research Themes and Departments
The research in BioClinicum aims to find new diagnoses and develope treatment methods in healthcare. There are six research themes operating in BioClinicum, reflecting the clinical areas at the hospital. The staff working in the building is affiliated to Karolinska Institutet and/or Karolinska University Hospital.
- Research Theme Children, Women and Genetics
- Research Theme Aging
- Research Theme Cardiovascular
- Research Theme Inflammation and Infection
- Research Theme Cancer
- Research Theme Neuro
The themes are affiliated to the following departments at Karolinska Institutet:
- Women's and Children's Health (KBH)
- Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS)
- Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK)
- Medicine, Solna (MedS)
- Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa)
- Oncology-Pathology (ONK/PAT)
- Clinical Neuroscience (CNS)
- Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC)
Theme Children, Women and Genetics
The research theme Children, Women and Genetics studies genetically related diseases at a molecular level to understand the mechanisms for the emergence and application of new knowledge in genetic diagnostics. They also research in medicine, obstetrics, reproductive health, etc.
Theme Aging
The research theme Aging studies Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, as well as injuries in the brain and spinal cord. The research theme focuses on identifying the molecular basis of pathology.
Theme Cardiovascular
The research theme Cardiovascular studies mechanisms related to heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, heart failure, thromboembolism, metabolism, inflammatory disease and diabetes. The theme participates in many cross-border networks with the aim of improving treatment results.
Theme Inflammation and Infection
The research theme Inflammation and Infection focuses on inflammatory diseases and allergies and respiratory diseases as well as infectious diseases. They study immunological mechanisms in inflammatory diseases. Infectious diseases in focus are HIV, malaria, pneumonia and meningitis caused by bacteria.
Theme Cancer
The research theme Cancer focuses on cancer and similar diseases. Especially studies to identify new treatment strategies, but also to develop methods for diagnosis, prognosis and precision medicine.
Theme Neuro
The research theme Neuro studies neurological and mental illness. The theme focuses on neurological diseases and brain and spinal cord injuries within stem cells and inflammation, neuroradiology, neuropharmacology, neurosurgery and psychiatry.
Further operations in BioClinicum
Center for Imaging Research Solna
The Center for Imaging Research Solna at floor 4 is a collaboration project between the Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital and SLSO. The aim is to develop a highly specialized and world-leading knowledge center that focus on the development of new diagnostic and treatment methods based on imaging technology. The center will act as a hub for the Karolinska University Hospital's research and education, and will be used both for basic research and patient-oriented research for several different diseases.
Karolinska Experimental Research and Imaging Center (KERIC)
Karolinska Experimental Research and Imaging Center (KERIC) is a part of Center for Imaging Research and is a core facility on floor 4 in BioClinicum, which offers different types of imaging methods within the framework of comparative medicine.
At KERIC you can find equipment for angiography, PET-CT and PET-MR. See contact details and further information about KERIC on their website.
Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (KTC)
The Clinical Skills and Simulation Center is a specially equipped department offering simulation in clinical and communicative skills for all student categories and staff in the medical and healthcare sector. They have three special rooms for advanced simulation with separate debriefing and maneuvering rooms and offer advanced skills training on simulators for surgery, endoscopy, angiography etc. Find out more about KTC on their website.
Conference and education facilities
The Conference and education facilities on floor 3, with entrance from Solnavägen, brings together premises for education, teaching and conference. Here you can find lecture halls, group rooms, informal meeting places and a lounge.
Radiochemistry and radiopharmacy
The functional area Radiopharmacy operates on floor 2. They manufacture and prepare sterile radiopharmaceuticals and injections used for diagnostics, treatment and research.
The radiochemistry and cyclotron operation are also working on floor 2. Radiopharmacy is organizationally located within the Image & Function area. The department is one of the world's largest and most advanced radiopharmaceutical facilities. The investment has secured the supply of radiopharmaceuticals to healthcare in the Stockholm area and nearby counties for many years.
The department has close collaboration with researchers from Karolinska Institutet and other academic partners, as well as various pharmaceutical companies. This creates good opportunities for productive research and development activities that will be at the forefront of the international development of radioactive drugs.
FO Radiopharmacy also holds courses in the fields of radionuclide production and radiopharmacology at the undergraduate and graduate programs.
