About BioClinicum
BioClinicum is Karolinska University Hospital's building for research and education. The building poses a hub for pre-clinical and clinical research with almost 100 research groups working within a single geographical area. The building is designed to increase the integration between research, education and health care, and to promote interactions between research groups.
Location
BioClinicum is located at the center of the Karolinska Solna site with entrances on Solnavägen 30 and Akademiska Stråket 1. The building creates a bridge between Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital as well as a center for research and education within the hospital. The building is physically connected to the hospital via the main entrance on Eugeniavägen 3, a skyway between the buildings and the walking path at the Akademiska stråket. A skyway also connects BioClinicum to Biomedicum, the laboratory research center at Karolinska Institutet.
Activities in BioClinicum
BioClinicum has 10 floors: the upper floors are home to the research laboratories whereas lower floors are devoted to education facilities, imaging and production. The research in BioClinicum is built around six research themes, reflecting the medical areas of the Karolinska University Hospital. The Education and Conference center together with the Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (KTC) are located on street level (floor 3). The building also houses a number of other facilities, such as an Imaging Center and the Radiochemistry and Radiopharmacy department.
Management organization
The operational management structure (BioClinicum house Council) reflects the thematic structure with representatives from all research themes as well as representatives from the other operations in the building. A designated House Director has the coordination responsibility for the physical work environment and safety throughout the building, in addition to acting as the Chair of the BioClinicum House Council.
Administration and coordination
The administrative office, within the hospital's Research, Education and Development Division, is tasked with development and coordination of BioClinicum management in dialogue with the Facility Management and Coor.
