Today’s education provides tomorrow’s personnel. Educating, enabling learning and guidance make up an important and natural part of the work at Karolinska University Hospital.

Clinical education and training are a central and integrated part of the work at Karolinska University Hospital. Education even has a given tie to the clinical research that is run at the hospital. Each term, Karolinska receives several thousand students from the University, institutes, colleges, high schools, Komvux (municipal adult education) and technical universities and colleges.

Clinical education at the university/college level occurs in close collaboration, primarily, with Karolinska Institute, but also with other universities and colleges.

Teamwork and collaboration between professions is an important part of the advanced healthcare that is conducted at Karolinska University Hospital. Different professions have different roles and competencies and contribute different viewpoints that are crucial in being able to meet our patients' multifaceted needs. By training collaboration and improved communication, patient safety is also increased.

As a student, you are given the opportunity to train these work methods through interprofessional learning in environments where different student categories meet. You learn functional work methods for teamwork and develop an understanding for other professions' competencies.

General practitioner and specialist training for resident physicians and interns are well integrated into the clinics/activities.

Research and education in the new hospital building

A completely new research building, new research center, and new educational facilities for the future Karolinska University Hospital in Solna will provide greater opportunities and better conditions for clinical research and education.

Karolinska's newly built research center will become operational during the latter part of 2017 and will create a central research hub that gathers over 100 research groups within a geographical area. The building is connected to the hospital, laboratory, laboratory quarter and Karolinska Institute's future research center, the Biomedicum, as well as the KI Campus, in general.

The research center will, for the most part, house research laboratories that are designed to promote collaboration in healthcare while simultaneously supporting interaction between research groups. Teaching facilities and clinical training centers will also be concentrated in the building.

Allocation is underway and is based on a thematic division of the research groups within six themes that transverse institution and clinic. These themes are: Children's Health-Reproduction- Women's Health, Cancer, Endocrinology-Diabetes, Inflammation-Immunology-Infection and Cardiovascular-Respiration as well as Neuroscience.

Operation startup and move

The operation startup and move have begun under the joint direction of Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institute. The operations that are moving into the new research center will primarily receive support from two projects, the FoU program and the operation startup project.

The FoU program handles such things as allocation (placements in the building), equipment purchases and future building flows. The operation startup project devises a plan on how and when the actual move shall occur. An operation startup program will be presented during spring 2016.

Patient centered FoU

Facilities for research and education are well integrated into clinical operations. Patient centered research and education are based on patient participation of one kind or another. The program office for the New Karolinska, Karolinska Institute and the operations have closely collaborated since 2012 on which areas are patient centered.
