Perioperative Medicine & Intensive Care
The Perioperative Medicine & Intensive Care function (PMI) is Karolinska University Hospital's collective resource for anesthesia, surgery, pre- and postoperative care and intensive care for adult patients. PMI is also responsible for decompression chambers (HBO) and pain medicine.
Perioperative medicine refers to anesthesia, surgery and pre- and postoperative activities. By means of high-quality and innovative care, well-integrated research and close cooperation with other activities, PMI contributes specialist expertise and methods for providing our patients with the best possible treatment.
Our training of specialist nurses in anesthesia, surgery and intensive care is the largest such initiative in the Stockholm county council area. Of the physicians undergoing specialist training, about 85 are in anesthesia and intensive care.
Our research activities are conducted in collaboration with the departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, CLINTEC and Molecular Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institute. The research areas are supported by a pan-PMI translational research platform.
We have a staff of about 1,600 working in both Huddinge and Solna.
