About our Thematic Organisation

Karolinska University Hospital's operating model has a thematic organisation. The organisation is based on the patient’s health care journey.

To give patients the best possible care, Karolinska University Hospital has implemented a change, creating an organization based on the patient's health care journey, with results that make a difference for the patient. The focal point of the development work at Karolinska is the "Patient first". The care should create value for the patient, in close collaboration with the patients themselves.

The care provided at Karolinska University Hospital is organized based on medical themes and a number of functions.

The operating model is based on the patient's health care journey.


Wards, departments and outpatient care units is organized by theme. With care teams working thematically, the goal is to create even smoother patient flows. Each theme will be divided into a number of medical units.

The Themes are:

  • Children
  • Heart, Vascular, and Neuro
  • Cancer
  • Inflammation and Aging
  • Trauma and Reparative Medicine
  • Women's Health and Allied Health Professionals


A function is an area of expertise that cuts across the themes. A function consists of skills and resources that are used in many different patient groups and thereby multiple themes.

The Functions are:

  • Medical Diagnostics Karolinska
  • Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care
  • Children Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care

Background: The operating model will make it clear who has overall responsibility for a patient at Karolinska, regardless of where the patient is in the chain of care. 

To create a strong organization for the university health care and for integration of care, research and education, the organisational model is developed in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet. The model will also promote collaboration by gathering different professional groups and specialists around a patient group. It will also be easier to follow up on the results of a treatment or how the patient experienced their care.

Taking shape in stages

The new organization took shape in stages. The operating model was introduced in phases. The first phase involved the units that moved into the new hospital building in Solna in the end of 2016. The transition to the new organization was in 2017. This is an emergent process and fine tuning are still on-going. 

Built for themes

The design and spatial positioning of the new hospital building in Solna, with close proximity to key functions such as intensive care and surgery, makes it possible to provide theme-based care. At the same time, the thematic approach also promotes medical development and research through the collaboration of specialists at different levels.
