New hospital building handed over in its entirety

News

In October, Karolinska University Hospital, took over the new hospital building in Solna in its entirety. An activation period will now begin in which the building is to be occupied and go from being a finished construction project to a hospital.

The takeover will signal the beginning of what is referred to as the activation phase. Initially this will mean starting to fill the building with all kinds of furniture and fittings.

"Right now, this is a building that we will be turning into a hospital. When we activated the first part of the building, we carried in 25,000 components (a table is a component, as is a computer). This building is approximately 20 per cent larger, so at a guess there will be about 30,000 components", says Stanley Holsteiner, director of the Programme office.

In the lead-up to moving in, all the employees who will be working in the new building will familiarise themselves with the new premises and learn how working there will function.

"Improvements will gradually be made to teaching and training to ensure that everyone knowns what it will be like to work here. This is about everything from fire training, where to find work clothing, how the new telephones work, to where the crash cart is and what to do in the event of a cardiac alarm", explains Stanley Holsteiner.

In 2016, Karolinska University Hospital took its first step into the new hospital building. This involved relocating the heart, lung and thorax activities for adults, as well as parts of the activities at the Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital, including the emergency paediatric admissions department, into parts of the building.

Karolinska has now taken over the rest of the new building and an activation period has begun. The activities will then move in during various periods in the course 2018.
