The Department of Transplantation Surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge is responsible for all kidney-, pancreas- and islet transplantations performed in the Stockholm region and is together with Gothenburg the main referral centre for liver transplantations in Sweden. Heart transplantations are carried out in collaboration with the departments of cardiology at Karolinska and Uppsala University Hospital. Thoracic surgical partner is Skåne Universtiy Hospital in Lund.
Annually, approximately 80-90 kidney transplantations and 50-60 liver transplantations are carried out at the department. In total, more than 2500 kidneys, 1000 livers and 180 pancreas transplantations have been performed at Karolinska Huddinge.
Programs for Live donor kidney transplantation and Live donor liver transplantation are well developed and represents important alternatives to deceased donor transplantation. Live donor nephrectomies are performed either through open surgery or through a hand assisted laparoscopic technique. Vascular access surgery is performed on both adult and pediatric patients with end-stage renal disease.
The department also performs liver resections in patients with liver tumours and a large number of vascular access operations.
In cooperation with the Transplant Unit at Uppsala University Hospital an organisation for promotion of organ donation and organ retrieval (OFO) has been established and surgical teams from both units are alternately responsible for the deceased organ donor operation.
Comprehensive research in the field of both solid organ transplantation and cell transplantation is carried out at the clinic
