The Department of Neurosurgery treats injuries, diseases, and deformities in the nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves).
Located in Solna, it is Sweden’s largest neurosurgical department, with 320 employees. About 40% of cases are emergencies. In addition to common forms of neurosurgery, we have access to two gamma knifes and maintain a good cooperation with the neuroradiology unit for interventional neurosurgery. Pediatric neurosurgical services are provided on a consulting basis at the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital.
On an annual basis, the department performs a total of around 2,200 operations and handles 5,000 outpatient visits. It also conducts extensive research in pain management, trauma, tumors and stem cells. The staff assists in the training of medical students and nurses, and is sought after as lecturers at schools and in the private sector. The department also hosts Swedish and international physicians and nurses for training or auscultation.
