Department of Vascular Surgery

The Department of Vascular Surgery primarily provides care for patients with diseases in the blood vessels outside the heart.

The majority of operations deal with diseases in the arteries, in other words, the blood vessels that pump blood from the heart out into the body.

Diseases of the veins, those blood vessels that bring blood back to the heart, are also treated, however, to a lesser extent.

The dominating basic diseases are hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis) and aneurysms.

There is a difference between arteriosclerosis, which brings about constriction in the blood vessels causing deterioration in blood supply to the organs that are supplied by the respective blood vessel, and aneurysm diseases, which lead to an expansion of the blood vessel. An aneurysm is associated with arteriosclerosis but not necessarily dependent on this disease for its development.
