Department of Psychology

The Department of Psychology is an independent operation within the realm of somatic care. A total of 33 psychologists work at the department. Clinical expertise encompasses psychological problems associated with somatic diseases and functional disabilities.

Pediatric services can be found in
- Neuropediatrics: 7 psychologists with pediatric neuropsychological expertise participate in work-up, diagnosis, and treatment of children with congenital or acquired brain damage and neurological diseases.

- Pediatric anesthesiology: 2 psychologists work with behavioral therapy for pain and apply a behavioral medicine approach to pain

- Audiology with habilitation: 2 psychologists conduct psychological work-up and treatment of hearing-impaired children, as well as family counseling.

- Cystic Fibrosis Center (CF): 1 psychologist, with responsibility for the psychological component of treatment and rehabilitation of children with CF, and their parents.

- DEMO section (Diabetes, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Obesity): 1 psychologist from the Obesity team works with work-up, treatment, and family counseling.

Adult services can be found in
- Audiology Department: 3 psychologists provide work-up, rehabilitation, and treatment of hearing-impaired patients, as well as problems associated with tinnitus.

- Cystic Fibrosis Center (CF): 1 psychologist, with responsibility for the psychological component of treatment and rehabilitation of adults with CF.

- Neurology Department: 2 psychologists involved with neuropsychological work-ups within neurological inpatient care.

- Psychology Clinic: 5 psychologists provide psychotherapy, crisis management, supportive counseling, and neuropsychological work-up.

- Geriatrics: 5 psychologists work at the memory clinic and provide work-up and rehabilitation for memory disorders and dementia; two psychologists at the Traffic Medicine Center work with driver license issues.

Research, development, and education
Psychologists at the department carry out independent research and development projects and they also participate in projects at other departments. Children with impaired hearing, children with neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological problems, patients with cystic fibrosis (both children and adults), children and adults with pain management issues, MS patients, elderly drivers, as well as patients with mild cognitive impairment are some of the patient groups that are the object of studies for which the research teams include psychologists.

The department has 4 positions for supervised practical work, with mentoring of psychology students for short and long trainee periods.
