The Department of Cardiology provides care for patients with ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, congenital or acquired valvular disorders as well as heart transplantations.
The Department of Cardiology consists of two parts; Karolinska Huddinge and Karolinska Solna. At both locations the Department manages all types of heart related medical diagnoses and has fully equipped laboratories and experienced staff to provide different types of angioplasty (PCI), device therapy such as pacemakers and implanted defibrillators (ICD) as well as electrophysiologic procedures.
Associate Professor Cecilia Linde, MD, FESC is the head of the Department, which includes close to 300 employees and performs 750 pacemaker and ID implantations, 500 electrophysiologic ablations and 1,500 PCIs annually.
As the Department of Cardiology offers comprehensive cardiovascular care, our scientific activity is based on clinical issues although it extends from basic experimental research to patient oriented trials. Besides a well-equipped Department, we have research facilities for patient oriented research including special laboratories for clinical cardiovascular research. Even in the research laboratory the care of patients is integrated with hospital based activities offering good opportunities for patient oriented research of various types.
Research activities span over a broad field of the cardiovascular spectrum but in particular focused on atherosclerosis, diabetes and heart disease, endothelial function, gene therapy, women and heart didease, device treatment in heart failure, cardiovascular prevention and epidemiology, and invasive electrophysiology.
Research projects are also carried forward with regards to possibilities to genetically predict cardiovascular disease and perhaps future pharmacological therapy tailored for individual patients.
Besides the staff in charge of cardiovascular care at the hospital the Department is comprised of dedicated staff for research activities - including physicians, research nurses, biomedical technicians, nurse aides and secretaries.
The Department participates in education at all levels and train all categories of students within the field of Cardiology and Medicine.
