Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM)

The Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM) is an independent research foundation, with about 350 researchers. We focus on major common diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatologic diseases, psychiatric diseases, and cancer.

Our 26 research groups include researchers from Karolinska Institutet and doctors from Karolinska University Hospital, which means that our lab can accept questions directly from the clinic and then quickly provide the results – such as new ways to diagnose or treat diseases – for use in the healthcare setting.

The CMM conducts translational research, which means that we focus our services on

clinical problems; in other words the problems experienced by actual patients.

To solve these problems we combine basic scientific expertise in disciplines such as genetics, immunology, cell biology, and microbiology, with doctors specializing in hematology, cardiovascular diseases, dermatology, neurology, psychiatry, and rheumatology.

This combination also enables us to uncover common factors underlying various diseases. For example, three of our groups found a gene that is a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.

CMM researchers published over 300 discoveries in scientific journals in one year and they are involved in about 30 new diagnostic or treatment methods, or clinical trials for new medications.
