Radiology holds a central position in modern medical care. It is both a diagnostic and therapeutic discipline with extensive ties to other medical specialties. The role of the radiology nurse is constantly evolving.
Examinations with ever more advanced procedures require the radiology nurse to keep up to date with new developments. Rapid advances in radiology toward increasingly complicated methodology may seem frightening to patients of all ages whom the radiology nurse encounters.
In order to create a sense of security it is therefore important to have highly-developed communication skills that enable the nurse, even during brief encounters, to develop a trusting relationship with the patient while making the decisions that result in an optimal examination.
Radiology nurses at Karolinska University Hospital may be found at:
- Central radiology
- Astrid Lindgren pediatric radiology
- Department of Neuroradiology
- Thoracic Radiology
- Radiology Department Huddinge
- Nuclear medicine
We supervise students from the first to the last term. Our emphasis on education can be seen in the fact that we have employed a full-time clinical instructor for radiology nursing students. In addition chief advisors are appointed at each facility.
The program includes training in methodology and seminars are held within the facility and at the Clinical Training Center.
Program subjects include radiography (80 credits), which is the major subject in the program, as well as medical science (15 credits), nursing care (15 credits), and social and behavioral science (10 credits).
The Radiology Nursing program at Karolinska Institutet has a curriculum that is based on active student participation. Great emphasis is placed on independent studies, seminars, and group projects. From the very first term you will be immersed in your future occupation by alternating theory with clinical training.
Subjects included in the program are radiography (teaching methods, techniques, and radiation), nursing care, medical science, and social and behavioral science. Theoretical subjects are taught at KI Campus Huddinge.
