The Department of Neonatology treats diseases in children during their first weeks of life.
There is a strong cooperation between various units. In all, the units in Solna, at Danderyd Hospital, and in Huddinge have a staff of around 450, with a total of 72 beds on 6 wards. We care for over 2,200 children a year, of whom around 70 are born extremely premature (less than 28 weeks gestation). We also work closely with the Karolinska Institute on research in respiratory diseases and respiratory support in newborns, early brain development and brain injuries.
Epidemiological studies and the impact of fetal life and infancy on adult health are also important research areas. The department trains physicians at all levels and nurses during specialized training.
