Department of Clinical Genetics

The Department of Clinical Genetics is part of the Karolinska University Laboratory at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.

The department is a regional center that:

  • conducts laboratory diagnostics of genetic diseases
  • provides information to patients and families with hereditary diseases, “genetic counseling”
  • offers basic training focused on genetic diseases for Karolinska Institutet's students
  • serves as a center of excellence for health care professionals, government authorities, patient support groups and the public
  • is a research center specialized in genetic diseases and hereditary.

The clinical department has around 60 employees. Affiliated to the clinical department and located in neighboring facilities in the Center for Molecular Medicine are six independent research groups organised within the Karolinska Institutet's Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery.
