Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine

The merger of Karolinska Hospital and Huddinge Universitetssjukhus AB resulted in the formation of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine, including a fully equipped clinical immunology laboratory, a regional blood center, and extensive R&D and education-related activities.

Clinic services include recruiting blood donors and collecting blood, production of blood components, twenty-four hour service for blood group serology studies and dispensing of blood components, sample-related diagnosis of autoimmune, allergic and inflammatory diseases, immunologic work-up (twenty-four hour service) for organ and stem cell transplantation, stem cell transplantation work-up, and treatment of patients with immunodeficiency, as well as patient treatment with various apheresis techniques, including handling peripheral stem cells.

The challenges that the department faces in 2007 are related to continued coordination of the department’s various services from a process, client, employee, research, development, and education perspective.

This cooperative effort will lead to better use of existing resources and set the stage for developing and strengthening operations. Profiling within the department will bolster Karolinska and KI's profiling process.

Our objective is:

For the clinic in its entirety to be a national and—in selected areas—an international leader within the specialties of clinical immunology and transfusion medicine. Our routine and special diagnostic procedures, our blood components, as well as patient treatment and consultations shall achieve the highest standards from an international perspective and we shall play a central role in the care chain.

To conduct research, development, and education, meeting high international standards in close collaboration with our clients and partners

To offer efficient and cost-effective service with the highest quality to clients, making us attractive as providers of our services. This creates a basis for large sample volumes, which is essential for conducting and developing special diagnostics, research, and education.

To offer all of our employees conditions that make our department an attractive workplace where employees describe their jobs as challenging and meaningful.
