Internship

Karolinska University Hospital is not only one of the largest hospitals in Scandinavia but also part of the medical school at Karolinska Institutet. It caters for doctors and interns studying at a range of levels, with world-class standards, supervised by doctors at the cutting edge of their fields.

The 18-month internships at Karolinska University Hospital consist of time spent in internal medicine, surgery, psychology, and as a general practitioner. The hospital offers a unique teaching approach for medicine students, as they have the opportunity to take on their own patients which builds their confidence and offers opportunity for discussion with pedagogically qualified, involved and professionally active supervisors.

Up to 8 weeks of surgery internship is spent in the ER, which places the intern at the heart of the action. This builds on their knowledge and fully prepares them for independent practice. Students also have the benefit of a variety of lectures, demonstrations and daily supervision, all of which is unrivalled by other teaching hospitals.

Karolinska University Hospital is also a training ground for occupational therapists, audiologists, speech therapists, physicians, radiology nurses, physiotherapists, nurses and social workers to name but a few.

After completing the internship, doctors can then specialise in a variety of different areas. This five-year course gives future specialists the time and facilities to fully immerse themselves in their subjects as well as providing them with the knowledge and support they need to become the leading doctors of tomorrow.

“This is the Harvard of Europe  - it’s not just any hospital as the education here is unrivalled. Karolinska has a unique quality to be proud of. The research facilities are excellent and the time dedicated to independent work is unique and extremely generous of the hospital. I feel very independent and have learnt a great deal, which I believe has made me more confident in my abilities and more mature in my approach to difficult situations.”
